You can check out the tier list at the source, as well all the other info on EVO Japan put together in the Dengeki Online article. At the time of writing, this list was made just before EVO Japan and comes with some comments on each individual placements. I have to say, this is kind of a hard game to make a good tier list for with loads of differing opinions between regions but this Japanese tier list makes a decent case for the base of a current list. I say all this to try to showcase how deeply ivy has been nerfed and although I couldn't say where she belongs on any list I highly doubt shes as broken as you may believe.EVO Japan is this weekend and for the occasion, the Dengeki writer Kurita Oyakata compiled his and other player's thoughts on a tierlist for Season 2 of SoulCalibur 6. Hes self nerfed by literally moving away from seig cuz he claims the character is now too cheap. Where seig was already strong he saw buffs and is now neigh unstoppable. You can see him not even make the top 8 at majors or drop out of those relatively early as well. They would face off regularly and not only did link and sayne regularly win their local more than not they'd come in at the top of majors.Īs the ivy nerf hammer dropped and dropped you can literally watch sayne start placing lower and lower in these locals. And you had linkorz who is a seig main nearly also to exclusivity. I hope you're familiar.Įarly in the games life you had sayne who played and still plays exclusively ivy. That being said let's use the nlbc as an example. I also watch the nlbc and basically any high skill level sc6 play available. Is ivy really that strong? I literally watch all of the major tournaments I can. Big damage with no thought is way less okay. ![]() Zas has all the meter, better stop what you're doing.ĭamn, SC6 would be absolutely amazing without RE and with seriously toned down CEs. Ivy has all the meter, better stop throwing verticals and sidestepping. Nightmare has all the meter, better stop what you're doing and throw a bunch of lows into your mix. IMO fighting games are at their best when they give you the chance to be aggressive and punishing (it's cathartic). It forces you to play fearfully and slow. Those two mechanics make it so hard to love, though, unfortunately. The characters are super cool (Voldo!), ringouts are fun and stressful, sidestepping is actually a strong tactic (ahem Tekken 7), move sets are complex enough that you have serious strategic decision making going on during fights, and characters have unique mechanical identities and strategies. If CEs were de-powered and REs were removed, SC6 might be my favorite currently living fighting game. Instead they made all diagonals have only a small angle that makes them almost vertical. Have you ever noticed there are no 45-degree diagonal attacks in the entire series? Such an attack would realistically - and visually - hit sidestepping and crouching opponents, it would be overpowered. It can't be 100% balanced, but it comes down to player skill above all else, because Soulcalibur follows a surprisingly strict set of rules when it comes to gameplay. It's rare to see character X have a move that completely counters character Y. Maybe it's telling that Ivy, Algol, and Azwel are often considered broken, because these 3 break that rule. Soulcalibur is also low on projectiles, magic, flying, and other such features that disbalance the game. Compare "Taki vs Astaroth" to, say, "Meta Knight vs Ganondorf" (back when I was playing Smash many years ago, matchups like that were basically guaranteed wins for the fast character). I've been clamoring this for years: Soulcalibur is one of the most balanced fighting games out there.ĭefensive actions (Guard, Guard Impact, crouching, sidestepping a bit less so) are extremely standardized, attack speeds are moderately standardized, throw speeds and damages are extremely standardized - there aren't extreme speed differences.
